PANCREATIN
Enzyme preparation
1 dragee of Pancreatin – 250 mg
Minimal enzymatic activity:
Amylase ................ 3500 FIP units
Lipase ................ 4300 FIP units
Protease ........... 200 FIP units
Pancreatin is a preparation derived from the pancreas of pigs and cattle. It contains the enzymes amylase, lipase, and protease, which are essential for the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Pancreatin in dragee form has high bioavailability because it dissolves in the duodenum, ensuring optimal enzyme activity.
Mild chronic exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
Dosage is determined individually, depending on the frequency, volume, and consistency of feces.
Usually, 1–2 dragees are taken with meals, with an additional 1 dragee if needed.
Sometimes, 3 dragees are prescribed at midday meals; dragees should be swallowed whole without chewing and with water.
To reduce steatorrhea, more than 3 dragees may be taken with meals, but if nausea, vomiting, or constipation occurs, treatment should be stopped immediately.
Nausea, vomiting. High doses may lead to hyperuricemia and hyperuricosuria.
Hypersensitivity to animal-derived proteins
Acute pancreatitis
Use in pregnant women only if expected maternal benefit clearly outweighs potential fetal risk.
Use during lactation only for special indications.
To increase enzyme bioavailability, H2-blockers or antacids free of Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ ions may be used with pancreatin, especially in patients with high gastric secretion.
Folate levels should be monitored during treatment, especially when using H2-blockers or bicarbonates. Supplement if necessary.
Dragees must be swallowed whole, not chewed, and should not remain in the mouth for a long time.
Store in a place inaccessible to children.
